In summary, the uppercase delta symbol, Δ, represents the difference between two values or the amount of change in a variable. In elementary math, it is often used to find the slope of a line, while in calculus it is used to find instantaneous velocity. The lowercase delta symbol, δ, is used to represent uncertainty or a derivative in calculus. Greek letters are used in physics to represent various concepts and can be found in a reference table or guide.

So I'm aware that the triangle is uppercase delta which means the difference between: 10[itex]\Delta[/itex]5=5

But what does Δx mean?

It means the difference between two values of the variable x, between two specified events.

It means the change in x. For x(at event 1) = 2 and x(at event 2) = 4 : delta x = 4-2 = 2

Actually I've never seen that use of it. I'm not saying it's wrong, but it's unusual.

But in elementary math texts, [itex]\Delta[/itex]x means the amount of change in the variable x. For example, the slope of a line is [itex]\Delta[/itex]y/[itex]\Delta[/itex]x, i.e. the change in y divided by the change in x, for any two points on the line.

When you learn calculus, you will see that the instantaneous velocity of an object traveling along the x-axis is the limit of the displacement divided by the elapsed time, [itex]\Delta[/itex]x/[itex]\Delta[/itex]t, as [itex]\Delta[/itex]t approaches zero.

It's already been answered pretty good. But just to clarify:

[itex]\Delta[/itex]x = x[itex]_{2}[/itex]-x[itex]_{1}[/itex]

or the slope of a function:
[itex]\frac{\Delta y}{\Delta x}[/itex] = [itex]\frac{y_{2} -y_{1}}{x_{2}-x_{1}}[/itex]

Which you'll find to be very similar to the definition of a derivative in calculus:
[itex]\frac{\delta y}{\delta x}[/itex] which basically means (difference in y)/(difference in x)

Capital delta is looking for a specific answer (most times) while lower case is looking for another equation (most times).

What book would provide me with a quick reference to the use of greek letters in Physics?

Most symbols have different meanings in different contexts. Pi is one of the few symbols that has a consistent meaning.

Related to Understanding Δx: The Meaning and Importance of Uppercase Delta in Math

1. What is the definition of Δx?

Δx, or delta x, is a mathematical symbol used to represent the change in the value of a variable. It indicates the difference between two values of the variable.

2. How is Δx used in science?

In science, Δx is commonly used in calculations involving rates of change, such as velocity and acceleration. It can also be used to represent the uncertainty or error in a measurement.

3. What is the difference between Δx and dx?

Δx and dx both represent changes in the value of a variable, but they are used in different contexts. Δx is used to represent the change in a variable over a specific interval, while dx is used to represent an infinitely small change in a variable.

4. How do you calculate Δx?

To calculate Δx, you subtract the initial value of the variable from the final value. For example, if the initial value is 10 and the final value is 15, Δx would equal 15-10 = 5.

5. Why is Δx important in scientific research?

Δx is important in scientific research because it allows scientists to quantify and analyze changes in variables. This is crucial in understanding and predicting natural phenomena and can lead to advancements in various fields of science.
