How accurate is a forecast a month out? ›

A seven-day forecast can accurately predict the weather about 80 percent of the time and a five-day forecast can accurately predict the weather approximately 90 percent of the time. However, a 10-day—or longer—forecast is only right about half the time.

10-day forecasts have an accuracy rate of about 50%. That means about half of the time you look at the 10-day forecast, it will not be correct. This makes it difficult to plan outdoor activities and travel in advance, which can be frustrating, but there is still value in having an idea of what the weather might be.

If the weather service is projecting a 50% chance of rain, that means that for the forecast area, about half of the area might expect to see some rain. It doesn't mean that it will rain half the day. That means that you might not get any rain at all, but other areas of the region may get rain.

Midlatitude weather can be predicted with reasonable accuracy for seven to ten days in advance. This was not always the case. The quality of weather forecasts has improved considerably over recent decades. A forecast covering seven days is now as accurate as that for four days 30 years ago.

Even now five-day weather forecasts are about 90% accurate, but 10-day forecasts are more like 50%. Anything beyond that becomes speculative. The Met Office and others do now issue long-term forecasts, but these give probabilities rather than making exact predictions.

Weather Channel would be the most accurate. For a period of fifty-eight days, data was collected from all three companies regarding temperature, humidity, and wind speed.

According to a University of Illinois study, the Almanac is only 52% accurate, which is basically a random process. Most short-term forecast models used by meteorologists tend not to go beyond two weeks because accurately predicting weather past that point is very difficult.

An assessment from the Post determined that the 45-day forecasts were not even able to predict trends accurately, and that, although the forecasts did not decrease in accuracy with time, the forecasts were so far off even in the short range as to be useless.

While the goal is always 100%, this can easily be seen as far out of reach. It is thus widely suggested that any percentage north of 70% is a good forecast accuracy percentage. However, this benchmark does have certain factors affecting it, such as industry and demand.

Additionally, the Almanac's predictions cover broad regions and may not be precise for a particular location. Despite the skepticism, the Almanac does have a track record of making accurate predictions claiming to be 80% accurate.
