Medications called stimulants (e.g., Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine) are considered Schedule II medications by the Food and Drug Agency. Schedule II medications are “drugs with a high potential for abuse, with use potentially leading to severe psychological or physical dependence” and are commonly used in the treatment of ADD/ADHD.

While these medications can have a meaningful impact on individuals diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, without extensive assessment and appropriate medical oversight, stimulant medications can lead to addiction, psychosis and serious cardiovascular side effects.

The Student Health Clinic provides ADD/ADHD treatment in accordance with the institutional and University System of Georgia policy.

Men's Health

According to the CDC, the leading causes of death in men are heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries from accidents. Many factors that put men at risk for these outcomes can be addressed with a health care provider in the Student Health Clinic such as preventive screenings, weight control, smoking cessation, and stress management.

Sexually Transmitted Infections in Men

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) affect more than 19 million people in the United States each year, according to the CDC. Some men may not know they are infected because many men fail to experience or notice the symptoms associated with STIs. STIs can affect any man who is sexually active, no matter what age, race or sexual orientation. Fortunately, many STIs are highly preventable. By being aware of changes in their bodies and practicing safer sex, men can protect themselves and their partners. Many men believe that oral sex is risk-free. However, numerous STIs can be transmitted during oral sex, including syphilis, herpes and gonorrhea. Men of all sexual orientations should be regularly tested for STIs.

To determine what STI tests they need, men should make an appointmentwith a provider at the Student Health Clinic.

Mental Health

Undergraduate and graduate students suffer disproportionately from mental health challenges. The Student Health Clinic collaborates with the Counseling Center to provide clinical management of common mental health issues that face our student population, such as depression and anxiety. We emphasize the importance of not only medication to assist with these problems but also therapeutic options.

Wellness Visits and Physicals

We want to take care of you when you are sick and when you are healthy to keep you that way. You can get a physical at a wellness visit to stay on top of your health, get screenings, update your immunizations, and create a prevention plan with a provider. Prevention can address multiple issues including, but not limited to, mental health concerns, diet and physical activity, weight, sexual and reproductive health, cholesterol, and blood pressure.

The clinic staff performs specific physicals for healthcare professions students, students trying out for sports teams, and students in the ROTC.

Appointments can be made online or by calling a clinic location.

PrEP

Preexposure prophylaxis or PrEP is medication people can take when they are at risk for HIV that can help prevent them from contracting the infection. A clinic provider can help you decide if PrEP is right for you and discuss the evaluation process. We can and will prescribe the medication as indicated. Please go to https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/prep.html for more information.

Primary Care

Primary care is a way of providing a medical home for patients, where they can be seen over a sustained period of time, not just for acute issues. The Student Health Clinic does this by taking care of you when you are not feeling well and providing preventive services that keep you healthy and take care of chronic medical conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, asthma, thyroid issues, and diabetes. We can also refer students to specialists when their needs go beyond the capacity of the clinic.

STD Testing and Treatment

We can perform screening for a variety of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and provide appropriate treatment. Our providers can also discuss strategies to prevent STIs, and we offer free condoms to students.

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Hepatitis
  • Herpes
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Syphilis
  • Trichom*oniasis

No appointment is necessary and there is no additional cost, just send a text to 404-236-6142 to get connected.

Travel Clinic

Many students travel out of the country as part of their educational experience or for personal reasons. You should speak with one of our providers about what immunizations or medications you may need, how your current medical conditions can impact your travel, and any health advice you may need for your destination. Students who travel as part of Study Abroad are required to have a health assessment, and our providers can complete that assessment free of charge.

Virtual Video Care

You can now see a provider from the comfort of your own home, offering you greater scheduling flexibility. We provide Telehealth visits using the Zoom platform. You can be seen for a variety of health issues via Telehealth. You can speak with a provider and, with them, decide if an in-person visit is needed.

Women's Health

The Student Health Clinic provides the following services regarding women’s specific health care needs:

  • Annual gynecological exams
  • Breast exams
  • Cervical cancer screening (Pap test)
  • Contraceptive management services
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Sexually transmitted infection screening and treatment
  • Treatment of gynecological problems (ex: irregular bleeding, polycystic ovarian syndrome)
  • Vaginitis treatment

Contraceptive Management

We have many contraceptive options available through our dispensary or by prescription. Whatever form of birth control a woman decides to use, her provider will discuss the benefits and risks of each birth control method.

  • Birth Control Pills
  • The Ring
  • The Injection
  • Emergency Contraception (Plan B)

Pregnancy

The Student Health Clinic offers pregnancy testing. Make an appointment with the nurse who can usually perform the test that day. The Student Health Clinic offers the urine pregnancy test, which provides the results that day. However, it may be necessary to perform a blood test for pregnancy. If that happens, the results will be back within two days.

Women who are pregnant will be referred to an obstetrician-gynecologist.

Birth Control Pills

The most common method of birth control is oral contraception. The Student Health Clinic has the combination pills. They are made of estrogen and progesterone and work by preventing the women's ovaries from releasing eggs. Taking the pill daily keeps a level of hormone that is needed to prevent pregnancy. The pill is one of the most effective means of birth control.

The Ring

The Nuva Ring is a small flexible ring that is changed once a month. The ring has both estrogen and progesterone to protect against pregnancy.

The Shot

Depo-Provera is an injectable progesterone-only method of birth control. One shot of Depo-Provera will prevent pregnancy for 12 weeks.

Emergency Contraceptive Pills (Plan B)

Plan B is available for women who have had unprotected sex within the last 72 to 120 hours. It can prevent pregnancy after having a contraception failure. The sooner Plan B is taken, the more effective it is. Plan B is Levonorgestrel 0.75mg. It prevents fertilization and implantation. It will not work once implantation has begun. Plan B is not the abortion pill. It will not work if a woman is already pregnant. Women can obtain Plan B by making a nurse visit. The Student Health Clinic offers counseling for women who have had unprotected sex and are concerned about pregnancy.

Refills of Birth Control

Women have two choices when having birth control refilled. First, a prescription for birth control can be provided and filled at a local pharmacy. If a woman has private insurance, this may be the best option. Second, birth control can be dispensed at the clinic. Women will need to come in or call the office to request a medication refill and will need to provide their student number and the name of the medication to be refilled to the receptionist. Medication will be available to pick up at the clinic in 24 hours.

Women will need to provide a copy of their recent Pap smear and medical record with documentation of the last Depo-Provera injection given in order to request a refill of Depo-Provera if the Student Health Clinic has not ordered this for them previously.

Women who are pregnant will then be referred to an obstetrician-gynecologist.

Please Note: We currently only accept the United Healthcare Student insurance plan that is offered through Georgia State University. Students with this insurance plan only pay a copay. All other students pay the amount listed above. Prices may vary based on the manufacturer used at the time of testing.
