How long will it take?

The R.N. to B.S.N. program is three semesters, 30 credit hours, online.

All required coursework to finish your degree can be completed online except clinical rotations which are required in two of the courses.

Bachelor’s prepared nurses are in high demand as hospitals and healthcare organizations try to address the current nursing shortage. Earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing will provide you with a competitive advantage through advanced training that will broaden your career options in leadership and specialty positions as well as prepare you to move into graduate level work.

Georgia State’s online R.N. to B.S.N. degree completion program is designed for practicing registered nurses with an associate degree in nursing or a nursing diploma. In just three semesters you can complete your core nursing curriculum and receive your bachelor of science in nursing. Flexible pathways consisting of less than nine credit hours per semester are also available to help you balance competing demands. The program prepares nurses at an advanced level to meet the challenges of today’s complex healthcare environment.

Georgia State’s School of Nursing is the only one in Georgia that offers the full spectrum of nursing education, from associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees with six of these programs available online. Acceptance into the University does not guarantee acceptance into the online R.S.N. to B.S.N. degree completion program.

Transfer pathway agreements are in place with many community colleges.

Application requirements for the R.N. to B.S.N. degree option.

  • Application and acceptance to Georgia State with nursing as the designated major.
  • Application and acceptance to The School of Nursing through a separate R.N. to B.S.N. application process.
  • Graduation from an accredited associate degree or diploma program.
  • Registration to practice as a registered professional nurse in Georgia or academically prepared to take NCLEX test.
  • Submit a current resume and transcript from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Grade point average of at least 2.5 in all general core courses.
  • Preference for admissions is given to applicants who have finished all core requirements areas A-F. If you still have one to four core courses left to complete, you are still eligible for admission consideration. If you have five or more, the program director may be able to work with you to design a pathway for consideration into the nursing program.
  • A minimum grade of C or higher is required for each general core prerequisite course.
  • Upon receiving an acceptance letter from Georgia State and also acceptance to the School of Nursing, establish contact with the School of Nursing records office to complete required forms and health-related requirements before entering into the nursing sequence.

General Core Prerequisite Courses:

  • ENGL 1101, ENGL 1102, (Composition I and II)
  • MATH 1101 or MATH 1111 (Math Modeling or College Algebra)
  • BIOL 2110K and BIOL 2120K (Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II w/labs)
  • A sequence of two science courses with labs from the following: CHEM 1151K and CHEM 1152K (Survey of Chemistry I and II w/ labs) OR BIOL 1103K and BIOL 1104K (Introductory Biology I and II w/ labs) OR PHYS 1111K and PHYS 1112K (Introductory Physics I and II w/ labs)
  • MATH 1401 (Elementary Statistics)
  • PSYC 1101 (General Psychology)
  • BIOL 2300/BIOL 2310 Microbiology and Public Health with Lab

Credit is given for the following courses based on RN license, successful completion of seven credit hours and successful completion of the NURS 3490 Professional Concepts bridge course: NURS 2061, NURS 3510, NURS 3610, NURS 3710, NURS 3810, NURS 4610, NURS 4620 and NURS 3200.

The students must provide their current Registered Professional Nursing license number to the academic adviser no later than the time of registration for the first nursing courses. The license number is recorded at that time.

International applicants are those students who are in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa (B-1, H-1, J-1, etc.), students who are living outside the U.S. and who will require an F-1 visa to study in the United States, students who are in the process of applying for Permanent Residency status but have not yet received the Permanent Residency card or students who have been educated outside the U.S.

Georgia State’s R.N. to B.S.N. program is rigorous and prepares you to tackle real-world healthcare challenges through sound clinical judgment and the promotion of evidence-based practice.

Beginning Fall semester 2022, Georgia State’s R.N. to B.S.N. program joins a collaborative academic agreement with other University System of Georgia schools. The collaboration allows a unique learning experience that enhances your baccalaureate academic studies. To fully participate in the collaborative, students will be admitted to the program during the fall semester. This maintains the flexibility to complete the program in three semesters.

A few key points about the Georgia State R.N. to B.S.N. program:

  • All didactic courses in the R.N. to B.S.N. program are taught online
  • Two courses include clinical rotations that are completed at assigned clinical partner organizations
  • All collaborative courses are taught in 8-week sessions
  • Georgia State courses are taught in 7-week sessions
  • Upon program completion, you earn a baccalaureate degree from Georgia State

Upon completing the R.N. to B.S.N. degree program, graduates will be on par with traditional B.S.N. graduates from this and other colleges and universities. They will be ready for advanced nursing education (master’s and doctorate degrees).

Scholarships
The School of Nursing offers a variety of merit and need-based scholarships to enrolled students. Students can search for scholarships offered through Georgia State and external scholarship websites by accessing the Scholarship Resource Center.

Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship

The largest scholarship in the Lewis College is available to many undergraduate and graduate female students in any Lewis College major. It is awarded in the spring and fall of each year.
