Finance professors earn the highest wages, across all disciplines. Why is that? ⬇"Finance academia is characterized by- 💲 high university revenues per faculty,- 👩🎓 a limited supply of relevant profiles, and- 📈 attractive outside options prior to doctoral studies."📑 See the paper "What Drives Finance Professors' Wages?" by Claire Celerier,Boris Vallee, andAlexey Vasilenko:https://lnkd.in/gBubhUhtcc: Guillaume CoqueretWhat's your take on these findings?

The connection between instruction and job tasks is a critical aspect of assessment quality in many educational and workplace settings. Today's new article in PARE takes on the idea of 'authenticity' in assessment development and interpretation and use. Petar Stankov has developed a measure of exam authenticity and explains it in the context of economics and higher education teaching and learning, in the article "Are Exams Authentic Assessment? The Case of Economics" (volume 29, number 3). #authenticassessment #postpandemic https://lnkd.in/gMFNxdge

Someone who enjoyed accounting became a Chartered AccountantSomeone with a passion for drawing became an artist. Those who loved biology became doctors, and so on.Sometimes we find ourselves questioning the purpose of studying certain subjects. We may have disliked studying history or struggled with calculus. But did you know from a young age which stream or career path you would choose? The goal is to allow you to explore various subjects so that you can discover your interests. Some subjects are also important for real-life applications. Even though I personally disliked studying history, it helped me understand our past. Knowing our roots is crucial; otherwise, we might be the first ones to complain about not being taught our own history. Many memes joke about calculus having no relevance in daily life. However, if you ask engineering or economics students, they will tell you about its importance. While our education system may have its flaws, this particular aspect is not one of them.

I can attest to this headline "Why it Pays to be a Double Major," and the key points of this article and academic study, from my personal experience as a double major having faced boom and bust and market dynamics over the last two decades while working across multiple industries. These days, with the sudden global shift in technology to a focus on A.I., I am surprisingly relying as much on my training in Philosophy as my studies of Mathematics. Just last week, I was speaking with a group of CEOs and reached all the way back to my classwork in Epistemology and the Philosophy of the Mind to discuss recent and future developments in Artificial Intelligence. For years when I practiced law, I thought little about Mathematics, but no doubt that major helped me change my career and I leaned heavily on mathematics at two critical points in my life: when applying to and studying Finance at #UCLAAnderson and again when I moved from Financial Services to Technology. My advice to those considering a double major: Go for it! It costs only a little more effort, and can be done in the same time frame as a single major. You may lose a few electives in order to concentrate in the second major, but you can take an extra class during the summer session or a few short credits over a winter break. Another great tip: find classes that apply to both majors. Some people think philosophy is all about writing and completely divergent from the study of mathematics. However, many of the great philosophers were mathematicians, including ancients like Plato and Aristotle, all the way up to modern philosophers like Descartes, Leibniz and Russell. For me, I took two advanced courses in Logic, which applied to both my philosophy and mathematics majors, as well as a course in the Philosophy of Mathematics.I checked the rankings and #NYU is still consistently ranked the number one school in philosophy globally and around number 16 for mathematics... a lot to be proud of, but just don't ask to see my grades from back then, my wife still thinks I majored in beer.https://lnkd.in/eyMk5KjZ

So thrilled to have been the lead on this publication, promoting the subject I'm passionate about teaching. So many times over the years I've heard young people say things like "I think I'd find the maths too hard" or "I don't want to just do economics at uni" or, heartbreakingly "isn't economics mostly for boys?". This guide is intended to help young people navigate their way through some of these issues and give them more confidence to apply to study economics and related courses in their Higher Education journey. Best of all? It's completely free.
