natural, clean ingredients

One of my favorite parts of the recipes that I share is the natural ingredients in them. Of course, now that includes this homemade hair detangler spray! Finding products with simple, clean, good-quality ingredients is becoming more important these days. Which is another reason for making your own homemade products.

sweet almond oil

There are lots of carrier oils you could use in this recipe, but I love using sweet almond oil. It’s great for your hair since it’s naturally rich in vitamins A and E and antioxidants. Plus it helps to smooth out and moisturize the hair stands, causing the hair to untangle more easily. If you haven’t used sweet almond oil before, it’s a lightweight oil that has a delicate scent, making it a great addition to this hair detangler spray.

Sweet almond oil is really great for both your hair and skin. Here are some of my favorite natural hair care and skincare recipes that also use sweet almond oil.

  • Sweet Almond Bentonite Clay Face Mask
  • DIY Face Serum
  • Hair Mask for Frizzy Hair DIY

Looking for a carrier oil substitute? You can also use jojoba oil, argan oil, olive oil or avocado oil in this recipe.

distilled or boiled water

When people ask me which is better, distilled or boiled water, I always answer the same way. Personally, I use the boiled tap water most of the time since it’s pretty easy to make and doesn’t require a trip the store! However, it is best to buydistilled water, since all impurities have been removed including microorganisms and mineral salts. With that being said, the next best option is usingboiled tap waterthat has been cooled. The boiled tap water no longer has microorganisms in it, but still contains mineral salts.

castile soap

Castile soap is such a great emulsifier is so many recipes with essential oils. This means it’s the ingredient that helps bind everything together. Without it, the carrier oil wouldn’t mix with the essential oils and it just wouldn’t work. One of the best parts about using castile soap is that you only need a small amount. And that’s in this recipe, and pretty much every homemade recipe I have used castile soap in! Also, I personally like using the unscented castile soap so that I get to pick the scent.

essential oils

Essential oilsare a great way to customize this hair detangler spray recipe. They add a beautiful scent to the spray, and several health benefits for hair. There are certainessential oilsthat are better for different hair types and different conditions. This recipe uses rosemary and peppermint essential oils, which are good for hair growth, thickness and shininess. You may substitute other essential oils that you enjoy or are going to help you with the overall health of your hair.

what essential oils are good for healthy hair?

  • Lavender : frizzy hair, overall hair health, growth & scalp
  • Rosemary : growth and thickness, frizzy hair
  • Peppermint : hair growth and shininess
  • Geranium : frizzy hair, reduce oil production
  • Roman Chamomile : moisturizing, overall hair health
  • Cedarwood : scalp and hair growth
  • Ylang ylang : scalp, hair texture and breakage
  • Copaiba : dandruff relief and greasy hair
  • Tea Tree : hair growth and dandruff
  • Lemongrass : dandruff

how to make a hair detangler spray at home

If you are using boiled water, then you will want to do that first so it can start to cool right away. You can boil your 2 ounces water on the stovetop or microwave the water in a glass measuring cup. I usually boil about twice as much (or more) water that I need, just in case something happens or I decide to make something else with it! In order for the boiled water cool faster, place it in the fridge or freezer while measuring out the other ingredients.

Measure out 3 teaspoons of sweet almond oil to the glass bowl. Add 1 1/2 oz. of distilled water or boiled & cooled water to the glass bowl and mix.

Using the diy hair detangler spray

When using the homemade detangler spray, you will need to give it a good shake to re-mix all the ingredients. Spray the detangler over all your hair, ensuring to get any tangling hair really well. Let the detangler sit on the hair for 2-5 minutes before brushing to allow it to work into the hair stands.

Now the rest is going to depend a little bit on the length and just how many tangles are in your hair. The best practice for long hair or lots of tangles is to start brushing from the bottom. I also recommend holding onto the top section of your hair like you are making a ponytail. This method allows the tangles to slowly loosen while working on a smaller section of the hair and reduce hair pulling on the scalp. Continue brushing towards the middle and top sections of hair using this technique until you can brush all the way through.

Lastly, look at the hairbrush you are using. Make sure it’s sturdy and gentle, so you don’t cause hair breakage. My family has used thisdetangle brushfor years, and it’s a great detangling brush for adults as well. My favorite part (besides being great for detangling) is that the bristles are really easy to clean out!
